Yeah so most drinks on store shelves are pretty bad. Apparently even vitamin water has been made to specifically cause you pain. The companies could argue that cramming the absolute largest amount of sugar or corn syrup OR high fructose corn syrup is what YOU asked them to do. In the many official taste tests you’ve given over the years. Right?
Thank goodness for eventual backlash. We’re wearing down the drink companies very slowly. On a stint to the Philippines, I was worried I’d be only able to try extreme sweet drinks if I wanted something new. I have plenty of experience with their snacks so I didn’t have expectations of subtlety. At 7-11 in Manilla I picked up a bottle of C2 Cool & Clean Green Tea.
I was told at first it was a good choice because it was unsweetened. And it’s not. Still if they gotta be sweet, at least they worked it out a little better.
An aside, don’t believe the whole anti-oxidants BS. People are paid to visit forums and review sites to post fake positive outcomes. Wanna be healthy, then avoid drinks with sweetness, unless you blended the raw fruits yourself. Get your anti-oxidants from plants. </end side rant>
But a few fake reviews of people gushing over healthy effects doesn’t mean products don’t have positive qualities. C2 has cut the sugar of usual teas by half easily. And hence why I brought this whole thing up!
You need to always check the calories, which are always from sugar, or HFCS. And you NEED to check the number of servings on the bottle. Of course you’ve been looking at the calories on the back, but that bottle might be 2.5 servings. This shady practice is unacceptable. Still you have to read. When you get your chance to murder the marketer liars who did this and then pushed to get permission to keep doing it, enjoy the moment. I’ll be thrilled. For now, just remember to calculate it.
C2 is 90 calories for the 16oz bottle. To compare, normally it you’d drink a 12oz soda at no less than 140 calories. Oh yeah that other tea or juice you’ve been favoring because it’s NotSoda yeah that was probably 220 calories.
The key here is the drink is more satisfying with less sugar. It goes with more foods, and you’ll more likely let your kid have a few sips. So for the companies that look long term and work hard, they will sell more.
There are few saints in the drinks world. And I’m not sure Universal Robina Corp are doing more than just business-as-usual. But there are better decisions that have been made and it’s important to show them and promote the resulting product. It pressures others into be less destructive with sugar in your drinks. Cheers!
